Paddling Maps of the Dan River
I prefer to make my paddling maps from terraserver aerial shots. My reasoning is this; if I'm somewhere on the river and have an emergency, I want to know the fastest way out. An aerial map might show that a farm is over the hill on river left and that you'll find nothing but more trees on river right. It might show where you can find an old logging road or farm road that you can follow to the main road. Sometimes knowing where the nearest state road is will not be as helpful as knowing where the nearest house is. I also find it easier to follow my location on the river using landmarks like fields or old bridges. That's my reasoning anyway.
