October 10, 2006. I like
today's
photo for two reasons. One is that Jackson is grappling a very good
friend of his from kindergarten. His buddy Eduardo is hands down the
happiest kid I've ever met. He has the biggest heart and is always
smiling. The second reason is that you can see Amy looking on in the
background. She doesn't get to see many of the classes, but really likes
watching the beginner class with all the little kids. Jackson went to
karate class four times last week. Twice to his advanced class and twice
to the beginner's class. He is working really hard to get back into the
swing of things after taking a month off for soccer. He said that he
wanted to go to karate every day that he didn't have soccer.
On Friday night the boys went to see Open Season with my sister and mom. That gave Amy and I the rare opportunity to eat, alone, at our favorite Mexican restaurant, Chile Verde, just around the corner. I think everyone enjoyed the movie and I know Amy and I enjoyed a couple of hours to ourselves.
We survived the yard sale on Saturday. It was cold, windy and raining, but people still came and we got rid of ninety percent of our stuff, which was the main goal. Amy was able to escape and go to work while I ran the store. My sister Melanie also setup shop in our front yard. I think she was more successful than we were, except for finding anyone to take her free kittens. I even taught the kids to say "el gatito es gratis!" for our Latino customers. I'm not positive that is the right way to say "free kitten" in Spanish, but I think it was close enough since we got the same answer we got from the English speaking customers, "NO!"
We had a family meeting yesterday to decide what to do with the money we made. The final decision was a two screen DVD system for the new van since it didn't come with one built in. Jackson got to spend his loot on YuGiOh cards. I'll swap a box full of toys that never make it off the bottom of the toy box for a single deck of cards any day. Ben got the Thomas The Tank Engine battery operated "Ben." His was more of a reward for going "accident free" for a week. Ben, the train, has been all over the house and through every tunnel that Ben, the boy, could make.
Sunday was spent organizing and hanging laundry room shelves. That may not sound like fun, but we loved getting some of our space back.
Jackson had a soccer game last night and won 1-0 giving his team a 5-1 record.
The only other thing of note that happened over the weekend was that Amy made me a Vegemite sandwich, you know, like in the Men At Work song. I would like to point out that she did this with much delight and enthusiasm. She said "oooh, you've just got to try this vegemite!!!" I would also like to point out that other than the reference in "Down Under", I knew nothing about it. Amy had just came back from a friend's house who had visitors from Australia. I thought "how cool, Vegemite!" It looked just like apple butter, so I'm thinking maybe it's made from figs. So I took a big bite, expecting something sweet and fruity. Our blog friend Melody may be the only one that knows where this is going, but I want a show of hands. How many people out there knew that Vegemite is a " dark brown, salty food paste made from yeast extract?" Amy might have made up for it with last night's apple pie, but I think I owe her one good prank sometime.
