Wednesday, June 7th, 2006.  The free outdoor children's theater season started last night with Once Upon A Blue Ridge's very entertaining performance of Jack Tales.  The Once Upon A Blue Ridge troupe will perform every Tuesday evening just up the street at Blackmon Amphitheater.  Next week's show is Wind Beneath The Willows, which is where we watched last night's show from, beneath the willow tree on the hill.  Or as Jackson and Ben call it, their hide-out.

I'm posting this photo for two reasons.  One is to document for posterity Ben's habit of playing with his top lip while lost in thought or while watching television or, in this case, watching a play.  The other is to talk about Ben's 'Bestest Hat'.  I'm sure many of you have thought "what's up with that hat?", because he has it on in almost every photo.  Ben likes his hair long, but doesn't want it in his face all day, which means that he needs to wear a hat.  And Ben's favorite cap by far is what he calls his 'Bestest Hat'.   He even likes to go to bed with it on.  He may wear the occasional bandana on his head and he has a hat that he wears at the pool and the beach, but %99 of the time, he has to have his 'Bestest Hat' because it's light weight, breathes well, is comfortable and accessorizes easily with most any outfit.  At least that's why I think he likes it.  But what do you do when you misplace the 'Bestest Hat'?  That's where it gets interesting.  And frustrating.  It's during these times that we start talking about cutting Ben's hair.  We just went through a couple of those days recently and with the hot summer months upon us, it just doesn't seem practical for Ben to keep a head full of sweaty blond locks stuffed under a cap everyday.

So you see, I had to write about Ben's hat today, because tonight it joined his 'pooh' and Jackson's first glasses in storage.  Yep, no more of this.  Amy and Jackson had an appointment this afternoon at Salon1 (can you believe Jackson has a hair stylist?  I mean, like a really good, drive forty minutes to get there, professional hair stylist.)  They took Ben with them in hopes that he could get a haircut too.  I told Amy that I would be okay with whatever hair cut he came back with.  We both truly loved Ben's long hair, but we also agreed that it was time to say goodbye to it.  Ben is now three and to honest, we both were really done with the long hair thing and were ready for a little boy haircut.  I was cooking supper when the van pulled up.  I was expecting either Ben's old hair or really short hair, but instead, this is what came running in the door.   Cuter than ever, but not a little boy haircut at all.  In fact he looks more like a girl than he did before, but it's the shortest they would cut his hair.  Trust me, it doesn't come through in the photos, but it is exactly the haircut we would give our daughter if we had one.  So Amy is planning on taking him back to someone this week to get more taken off.  This is what it looked like after his b*th.  And this is the photo that keeps cracking me up, it's Ben halfway through his cut. It also shows off what Ben calls his 'big black eyes.'

On Sunday Ben spent the day with his Papa and cousin Caleb.  While he was gone, Jackson and I hit the pool.  For Jackson, not having his baby brother along meant getting to go off the rope swing, diving board and water slide as much as he wanted, which thrilled him to no end.  All I had to do was keep up with him.  We took a pizza with us and played until I was waterlogged and called it a day.  We had a ton of fun.

Not much has changed with our friend Don's condition.  He is still in critical condition at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.  Both he and his family have remained at the forefront of our thoughts all week.

I was sitting on the couch last night, not late at all, deleting excess jpegs from my laptop, when I fell asleep.  That's the second time I've fallen asleep while working on the computer this month.  The last time it happened I woke to find my fingers still on the keyboard and a row of wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww's a mile long in the address box of my web browser.
