Wednesday, November 2nd, 2005. First I would like to say congratulations to Mike and Jennifer. I have a brand new first cousin. Her name is Madeline Heath and I cannot wait to meet her.
Today's photos are some of the boys and I from over the
weekend. Three photos from a playground in Hillsville that we visited
Sunday morning and one of Ben and I jamming early Saturday morning. When I
pick up the guitar Ben runs into his room to get one of his instruments so that
he can play with me.
The cute thing is that he watches me and tries to stand just like I do. He
also watches my foot and tries to tap his the way I do. Saturday morning
we were playing American Woman when I decided that we should pull out the
Strat
and do it right. After taking it out of its case and blowing the
dust off the amp, we cranked it up. The boys were so tickled with that.
They jumped on our bed and danced and sang. Jackson was so happy with the
really loud music that he shouted "I love you Daddy!" They have since
asked me to get it out again. And of course they had to twist and twist my
arm. Electric guitars and babies just don't go together, so I put it up
when Ben was born and only play it when I'm at the house
by myself, which is
never. But I guess Ben is getting old enough to enjoy a little distortion.
I've been meaning to post for some time about Jackson's music taste. What
I have discovered is that you can take any song that a fourteen year old boy
would love and our boys will think it's awesome. The song can be from any
era, but it has to be loud, simple and pop rock (think Foo Fighters).
Nothing too heavy or dark, but good old fashioned straight ahead high school
rock songs. I'm sure Jackson will just love AC/DC when he discovers them
one day. Jackson's favorite songs are The Scorpions Rock You Like
A Hurricane (he forgets their name though and calls them The Lobsters),
Eddie Grant's Electric Avenue, Twisted Sister's I Wanna Rock
(thanks to the Spongebob Movie), Jerry Reed's Amos Moses (which I loved
at his age too and you can blame me
for that one, but come on, it's about a guy
that wrestles alligators. What's not to like about that at five?), and his all time number one
is The Beastie Boys' You Got To Fight For Your Right. You Got To
Fight really speaks to him. He says he thinks that song is true. To
quote him "you know how parents don't really let you have that much fun and make
you go to school all the time, I think that's what that song is about." He
says "Oldiiiieee Goldiiiieee" in an exasperated tone whenever we turn on the
radio in the car. Pretty much anything that he doesn't like is an
Oldie Goldie to him. He doesn't like Country, which is what Amy likes.
Ben calls Country music Cowboy Music and we have no idea how he knows to do
that. And while I had big plans to pass on my taste in music to the boys,
I now know that it doesn't work that way. As cool as I might think Elmore
James is, it's hard to compete with The Lobsters. But I do have a pretty
good idea of what songs to use when I make a mix for the boys. All I have
to do is think like a fourteen year old boy, and you know, like most guys,
that's not really a stretch for me.
