Sunday the 13th. 10:00am. An
eventful night last night. After rehabilitating for only one day at the
convalescence center following her release from the hospital, Grandma Sue
returned to ER at Southside Regional, the place she had just left, when she
became sick to her stomach. A CATscan showed a blockage in her
intestines, which could possibly require surgery. Because surgery
is a very high-risk option for Sue, she was transported to MCV in Richmond.
Amy and her other siblings set with her through the night in ER at MCV.
Amy's friend Hilary drove down from Short Pump to sit with Amy for part of the
morning. Sue has yet to be admitted into a room and we don't know if she
will be able to avoid the surgery or not. They may try other options and
evaluate her for most of the day before deciding. The boys and I are
getting ready to join Amy in Richmond.

7:00PM. Sue was admitted into a room on the ninth floor
today at noon. After spending the afternoon in Richmond, we brought Amy
back with us to Colonial Heights so that she could take a brief nap. As of
now the plan is for Amy to return to Richmond and spend the night with her mom,
then drive back to Colonial Heights in the early AM so that we may all return to
Mount Airy together. We don't know exactly how things are going to
happen with Sue, so we have to make judgment calls on when our time in town will
be best spent, since we can't stay indefinitely. Sue's situation seems to change pretty frequently, but for now
they seem satisfied with her status and it appears that she will not be rushed
into surgery. If surgery is required it will probably happen later in the
week. Jackson thought it was very funny that his dad got a ticket
for running a red light in downtown Richmond. I guess I've been putting
around the streets of Mayberry for so long that the big city thing threw me.
I was actually trying to read directions to the ER from a scrap of paper and
didn't see the light. I don't doubt that it was there, but it would have
been nice for the officer to have cut me some slack, I mean I was in an
out-of-state mini-van with two kids in front of the hospital holding a piece of
paper looking up at the street signs on a Sunday for Pete's sake. Notice
that I have pictures of Ben collecting rocks and sticks in downtown Richmond.
You can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of
the boy...
